Karen Davis
I’ve been a crafter most of my life and love using natural elements. During a Vaca in Yucca Valley I discovered an abundance of dead Cholla cactus wood and I knew there must be a good use for it. I envisioned a lamp, and so it began!

Cholla Plants
Cholla cactus (cylindropuntia) grows in the Mojave high desert in what are called strands. They reach an average height of 48” and bloom in the spring. They’re referred to as Teddy Bear Cactus because they look fuzzy but don’t be fooled. The spikes are barbed and sharp and hard to remove.

The Process
The wood for my lamps is from the Yucca Valley area. I collect the dead Cholla, remove the thorns, Dremel the entire surface, and then drill a hole down the center. Each piece will reveal what base and shade I will use before I’m done cleaning it. I do all the wiring myself as well as the shade embellishments.
